Starting a new job is starting a new phase in life. Since this new phase presents new opportunities and challenges, you will want to be sure that you do not make small errors and start off on the wrong note. With some simple steps on your first day at work, you can give your best efforts and offer a good impression to your employers and colleagues.

Heres a checklist of some dos and donts that will help you make a good impression on your first day at work:

#1.  Wake up early on your first day at work

On your first day, you definitely do not want to seem as though you belong at the dull mans club! Presenting an active and enthusiastic personality will help you get noticed by your seniors and new colleagues, who will also be excited to have you on board.

This is possible if you wake up early and dedicate enough time for self-renewal. Some exercise, a filling breakfast, and some self-care are all you need to energize yourself and set the day right.  


Never ignore the punctuality rule. It is essential that you reach on time on your first day. Avoid excuses such as issues with the alarm clock, traffic, canceled cabs, and road accidents—always take these factors into account and plan accordingly to make it on time.

#2. Dress well for your first day

It is without a doubt that the skills you possess landed you your job. However, a good dressing sense is something that will always serve as an asset for you. Dressing well does not mean that you obsess over what to wear and freak out. Simply put, wearing something that is clean and pressed, and is comfortable yet presentable enough to not make you look awkward is essential in landing a good first impression.

Always go for an aesthetic appeal over extreme comfort.


Choices such as crocs, flip-flops or even running shoes are a big no. This is where the saying ‘stick to the basics’ comes in handy. You can go for casual business outfits since the chances of them going wrong are to slim to none.

#3.  Be proactive

Your first day at work will require a lot of documentation and an extensive orientation. Inevitably, you will be presented with significant and new information. This is an excellent opportunity for you to learn about the company and also about your role and responsibilities. Be proactive during this process and ask questions when you feel the need to, even at the slightest.


Note down even the details you find trivial. Assimilating all the new information at the earliest will familiarize you with the company and you will no longer feel like a new employee. At any cost, avoid any temptation to skip the orientation or take it lightly.

#4. Socialize

Make an effort to reach out and introduce yourself to your co-workers. If you are an introvert, you have to step out of your comfort zone and make an extra effort to talk to your colleagues. Most likely, your first conversations will always be about your background, where you move out from, and will gradually move to light and neutral conversations. Being open and receptive to new conversations will help you get to know your colleagues better and build a positive relationship with them.


However, stay away from conversations that revolve around too many personal details on your first day at work, which can be offensive and may harm formal relationships in the long run.


Friends turned foes at work are more harmful than acquaintances. Try to maintain the right balance between disclosure, being friendly, and being professional.

If you do not want to engage in too many conversations, make sure you maintain a positive body language. Be your authentic self and do not form strong opinions about anyone.

Offering people a smile, and a willingness to help when someone asks and greeting others cordially are necessary traits that you need to exhibit.

First impressions are often difficult to forget and positive first impressions are likely to take you far with respect to work life. So put the best foot forward and try to get things right!
